Christy R. Newsome, E-RYT 500, YACEP,
Co-Lead Trainer: 200-Hour Teacher Training Program at Giving Tree Yoga,
Professional Yoga Therapist*, based in Atlanta, Georgia
My philosophy is that yoga can help create space and freedom in the mind and body. I encourage students to honor their bodies and to let go of ego. I focus on breath awareness and FEELING a pose in the body, rather than achieving some idea of a "perfect pose." My goal is to help my students find the union of mind-body-spirit that is at the heart of yoga!
I have been practicing yoga for over 20 years and teaching since 2011. I received my 200-hour certification through Peachtree Yoga Center and my 500-hour and professional yoga therapy certification through Etowah Valley Yoga. I am registered through Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT 500 level (their highest level) and a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP). I am also the lead trainer for the Yoga Teacher Training School (RYS200) at Giving Tree Yoga in Smyrna, GA.
I started yoga for the physical practice, but I kept coming back to my mat for the benefits I had no idea I would find. Growing up, I was a competitive athlete and as an adult, I began to experience physical problems, stemming from the intensity and injuries of competitive sports. After trying everything western medicine had to offer, I decided to pursue a natural approach to my health. A regular yoga practice (along with many healthy habits) truly improved the quality of my life. I knew I had to share what I had experienced with others!
I am a teacher at heart. I was the director of technology & computer teacher for 17 years at a private elementary school, teaching and supporting both children and adults before pursuing a full-time yoga career. I have a B.A. in business & computer science from Furman University & a M.S.Ed. in curriculum, instruction, & technology. I have also coached gymnastics and cheerleading over the years. I bring a kind heart to my classes and private sessions and have a passion for helping people get in touch with their best selves.
I also love reading...and coffee...and New York City...and the Braves.
